Dry Needling, what is it and what does it do?

At Collective Motion, all of our Osteopaths and our Myotherapist are qualified to do dry needling and love incorporating it into our treatment plans. We commonly get asked ‘what’s dry needling and how will it help me?’, so here’s some information to help you understand why we love using it to help our clients.

So, what is Dry Needling?

While the name may be off putting, lots of people are surprised to find that it uses the same needles as acupuncture. However, that is where the similarities end. Acupuncture has been around for centuries and is a very well know Eastern Medicine treatment approach that is most often makes up the whole treatment. Dry needling makes up one part of an Osteopaths or a Myotherapist’s treatment and is used to treat muscle tightness and pain.

The thin needles are inserted into trigger points of the tight muscles, with the aim of decreasing tightness, increasing blood flow and reducing pain. By inactivating the trigger points of the muscle, there will be increased function and movement available and can help with stiffness or tightness.

But what is a trigger point you ask?

A trigger point is a tight point that is caused by the creation of a taut band within the muscle, commonly caused by posture, muscle loading and repetitive low stress movements. A trigger point can cause local as well as referred pain, for example a trigger point in your shoulder can cause neck pain or headaches. They can also contribute to muscle weakness and restricted range of motion of the muscle and the joint it affects.
