Neural Flossing
Neural flossing, also known as neural gliding, is a series of gentle movements that work to stretch and mobilise irritated nerves. Neural flossing can also help improve your range of motion through affected areas and decrease tightness of surrounding muscles that may be impacting your nerve pain.
Neural flossing can be helpful for conditions such as sciatica, piriformis syndrome, disc bulges and other disc pathologies. If you’re struggling with tightness or nerve pain down your leg, give these exercises a go. Our team of Osteopaths are here to help if you have any questions or would like some hands on treatment.
Step one - ankle movement
Standing, place one foot on a box/chair or something that is at a comfortable height
Standing straight, simply bring your toes back towards your shin and then point your toes
Keep moving between the two movements feeling a stretch down the back of the leg, likely stronger through the bottom half
Repeat at least 10 times
Step two - hip hinging
Standing in the same position, relax your foot
Hinge forward through your hips, avoiding bending or flexing through your back, and then return to standing
Keep moving through the two movements feeling a stretch down the back of the leg, likely stronger through the top half
Repeat at least 10 times
Step three - ankle and hip
Standing in the same position, we are going to combine both of the movements
While flexing your foot (bringing your toes back towards your shin), hinge forward from your hips
As you return to standing, point your toes
Continue to work through the movements together, feeling a stretch down the back of your leg
Repeat at least 10 times
