Can I do Pilates in Early Pregnancy?
Pilates is a great way to stay active and strong through your pregnancy, but there can be some confusion around is it safe to do Pilates in early pregnancy.
Neural Flossing
Neural flossing, also known as neural gliding, is a series of gentle movements that work to stretch and mobilise irritated nerves. Neural flossing can also help improve your range of motion through affected areas and decrease tightness of surrounding muscles that may be impacting your nerve pain.
Neural flossing can be helpful for conditions such as sciatica, piriformis syndrome, disc bulges and other disc pathologies. If you’re struggling with tightness or nerve pain down your leg, give these exercises a go. Our team of Osteopaths are here to help if you have any questions or would like some hands on treatment.
Pelvic Floor Activation
Learning to control your pelvic floor muscles is an important skill to learn for anyone, but particularly if you are on your pre or post natal journey. Creating a mind-body connection to this muscle group is integral to your pelvic stability as well as other things like bowel and bladder control. You’ll be surprised how many things can be helped with good pelvic floor awareness!
Try these pelvic floor activation exercises to get started and begin to strengthen your connection and engagement with this very important muscle group.
Postnatal Pelvic Floor Stretches
During pregnancy and birth there is a lot of tension and load that goes through your pelvic floor. In the postnatal period, the focus is on restoring activation and control through these muscles to help them recover post birth while also building some strength to support you while you’re caring for your bub.
While strength and activation are important, just like any other muscle group stretching is also important too! Taking some time to stretch and relax is beneficial to the health of these muscles but also gives you some time to focus on your body and listen to what it might need.
Prenatal Pelvic Floor Stretches
Your pelvic floor plays a vital role during pregnancy and works hard to support your internal and external structures as your body grows and changes. While it’s important to have a strong and controlled pelvic floor during pregnancy, it’s also important to stretch and know how to relax your pelvic floor during the prenatal period.
These are our top four prenatal pelvic floor stretches that you can do at home to make sure you are getting that relaxation and all important stretch through these muscles to help prepare your body for birth and beyond!
