What is Reformer Pilates?

Chances are you have heard of Reformer Pilates, tried a class or have thought about starting but not really sure what to expect. Regardless of your knowledge base let us break it down for you.

The reformer bed was invented by the Pilates founder Joseph Pilates himself. It takes the concepts of matwork Pilates into a spring-loaded resistance machine. Joe Pilates believed that by concentrating on precision of movement, awareness of breath control and a continued flowing movement, the exerciser will be able to alter abnormal movement and achieve a carry-on effect into daily function.

Reformer Pilates exercises are very versatile and can be progresses or regressed by adjusting the aim and intensity of each exercise through the use of different levels (by using arm and leg movements), position (from lying to sitting to standing movements) and resistance (through the use of various Pilates equipment).

Reformer Pilates aims to develop the deep, postural ‘core’ muscles that support the spine throughout posture movement, enhance normal movement patterns and improve overall alignment.

Reformer Pilates classes focus on utilising the entire body to improve strength, flexibility and posture. While many of the movements might be small and performed slowly, they’re done to target specific muscle groups, using the reformer to add resistance and challenge to all exercises.

From rehab clients that needs the support of the springs to enhance their recovery, to desk workers that sit too much. Reformer Pilates can be complementary to all lifestyles. For anyone on a pre- and postnatal journey, reformer Pilates can help maintain muscle tone and strengthen your legs, bottom, shoulders and back to limit aches and pains throughout pregnancy and beyond.
