What is Myotherapy?
There seems to be confusion around what is myotherapy and how it is different to remedial massage. We wanted to take a second to explain what a Myotherapist does and how they can use their skills and knowledge to best help you.
What is Myotherapy?
Myotherapy is a trusted healthcare profession, incorporating a wide variety of treatments that focus on the assessment, treatment and management of pain and dysfunction of muscles, nerves, and joints. Myotherapists study for 3 years to gain qualification in their field, in which time they develop a deep understanding of the way the human body moves.
What does a Clinical Myotherapist do?
Clinical Myotherapists can provide a wide variety of treatments including deep tissue massage and sports massage, myofascial release, muscle energy techniques, dry needling, cupping, joint mobilisation. They are also able to prescribe rehabilitative exercises to stabilise, mobilise or strengthen any areas of concern.
Pain management, patient education, posture evaluation, ergonomic advice, therapeutic aids, and relaxation techniques are also provided to assist with patient recovery and management.
What to expect from an Initial Consultation?
A Clinical Myotherapist will complete a comprehensive patient assessment, gaining a deeper understanding of the patient’s main complaint. Through combining physical assessment of posture, movement patterns and palpation findings they isolate affected musculoskeletal structures. As Myotherapy is a physical therapy, treatments will include hands on treatment which can include remedial massage for areas of the body that are under tension. This technique utilises firm strokes for healing and rejuvenation, and enhances the body’s own healing abilities. Myotherapists also utilise techniques such as cupping, dry needling, joint articulation, muscle energy techniques and mobilisation to address affected areas.
Why choose a Clinical Myotherapist?
As qualified practitioners, Clinical Myotherapists implement up-to-date research and evidence-based knowledge to support patient outcomes, with a focus on supporting self-management. They use clinical reasoning and manual hands-on therapy to provide a specific management program, with short-term and long-term goal setting depending on each patient’s requirements.
A physical therapy designed to prevent, treat and manage musculoskeletal pain and associated pathologies.
